While the general public perceived the song as the reason of his incarceration, they were innocently mislead. The murder was a result of a staged drive-by he set up possibly to eliminate the competition between him and his other upcoming rap friends. On February 13th, 2019, Melly turned himself into the police and received two counts of first-degree murder. Melly wrote the song in 2016 and released it in March of 2017 while the shooting he was involved in happened in October 2018. Although lyrics paint a picture of a lifeless body covered in yellow tape, a mourning family, and a “fucking homicide,” a closer look at the lyrics displays a more mournful scene. With the release of Murder on My Mind, the question is raised: is YNW Melly’s melancholic song a murder confession? The simple answer is no. Although there has always been a trend in music to discuss the repercussions of previous crimes, many artists have seem to take it too far. At the initiation of the first verse Melly starts his song discussing the separation he felt in prison his first sentence a result of drug and gun charges. On his song he mentions many incidents in his past, confessing and reviewing many crimes previously committed. Melly’s track is a sad testimony to a life of pain. After being tried and sentenced for the murder of his two close friends two weeks ago, fans in YNW Melly’s Murder on My Mind started to look at his song more literally.
